Folk vs. Popular Culture
Folk culture is defined as traditional practices held by small, homogenous groups, typically living in isolation. Popular culture is found in large, heterogenous societies that share certain customs and habits. There are multiple distinct differences between folk and popular culture. The origins of folk culture are usually unknown and are largely anonymous, while the origins of popular culture are well documented. Popular culture changes frequently, based on on rapid simultaneous global connections, whereas folk culture changes relatively little over time. As a result, folk culture is more likely to vary from place to place at a given time, whereas popular culture is more likely to vary from time to time at a given place.
