The Hutterites
The Hutterites are a group of anabaptists that stem from the Radical Reformation of the 16th century. The Hutterites are a community of brethren that tend to reside in the northwestern United States. This Folk Culture manages to maintain its existence in the increasingly globalized country of America through adapting to accept a variety of technologies and beliefs that are prevalent in the world of Popular Culture. Primarily, the Hutterites practices call for them to homeschool their children, however there are increasing numbers of Hutterites that attend college and graduate as plumbers, teachers, electricians, and carpenters. In fact, a National Geographic show titled "Meet the Hutterites" focuses one episode on an argument between a Hutterite mother and her daughter over the teenager attending college. In addition, the Hutterites are moving towards manufacturing as a means of supplementing the income that they lose due to new land purchases and barn reconstructions. The Hutterites have began manufacturing custom made parts in state of the art facilities. In addition in the past the Hutterites discouraged leisure time, however currently these attitudes are shifting and increasingly the Hutterites are spending their leisure time reading, playing sports, reading books or magazines, or creating music. In addition, the Hutterites went as far as to publish their own books written by Hutterites about Hutterite culture so that their youth can read books that contain characters they can relate to. The Hutterite community manages to be a thriving folk culture in our exceedingly globalized society by adopting and altering their principals and practices to accommodate certain aspects of popular culture, while still staying true to themselves and their culture.
